If you are planning your trip to Medellin and have Guatape on your radar, surely you have asked yourself this question: How much time do I dedicate to Guatape?

The quick and sincere answer is: Yes, it is possible to know the basics of Guatapé in a single day. In fact, it is what 80% of tourists do. However, the real answer from us, the locals, is very different: if you come in a hurry, you are going to miss the real magic that this beautiful paradise hides.

Here we explain exactly what you can do in a Guatapé "day trip," we will also tell you what you miss out on by going with limited time, and how to choose the best option according to your travel style.

The famous "Day Trip": What can you get done in 1 day?

If you have a tight itinerary and your only option is to do a round trip from Medellín (which is about 2 hours away)

One day will be enough to check the most iconic attractions off your list.

In about 8 to 10 hours of visiting, you will have time to:

  • Climb the more than 700 steps of the Peñol Rock: And enjoy one of the best views in the world.
  • Walk through the colorful streets:
    • Guatapé's Main Park
    • Umbrella Street (the most famous and visited)
    • The Beautiful "Calle del Recuerdo"
    • Comercio street
    • Anticuario

Take hundreds of photos with the colorful and traditional zócalos that adorn the facades of the houses that have turned Guatapé into the largest open-air art exhibition in the world.

The Downside of the One-Day Trip: Since this is the most popular way to visit, you’ll have to share these spots with hundreds of other tourists, especially on weekends.
